If you’ve ever read this blog, chances are you’re familiar with Man Man, so I won’t waste anyone’s time trying to describe the high energy, gypsy-pirate-punk-cabaret spectacle that is a Man Man show. Just know that it’s thoroughly entertaining, and while I haven’t heard the new album, the handful of new songs I heard previewed at South by Southwest this year were some of the most complex and fleshed out songs I’ve heard from the group.

[MP3] Man Man: “Life Fantastic”

We finally got a second song from Man Man’s upcoming Life Fantastic (out 5/10). This time it’s the title track, a delightfully dreadful song about finding a corpse at what was previously a relaxing picnic.

MP3: Man Man – Life Fantastic
Underneath the southing violins, there’s the jazzy noir ballet of Honus’ vocals that plays just about as interestingly as the black subject matter. I’ll admit that I like my Man Man songs more on the screaming-but-catchy side, but these slow ones are often the most beautiful.

[VIDEO] Mister Heavenly cover Misfits’ “Hybrid Moments”

I’ve managed to avoid hearing anything about SXSW 2011 that’s so awesome that I would rip my hair out. But now that I’m digging through Youtube to find some gems, I doubt that’ll stay the case for long. Mister Heavenly (Honus from Man Man, Nick from Islands/the Unicorns, Joe from Modest Mouse and Michael Cera from the movie screen) have been covering this Misfits song for a few months but somehow I forgot to ever post it. The recording quality is great, so I figured this is a great time to share it with you guys. Here’s Mister Heavenly tackling the Misfits’ “Hybrid Moments.”
