[VIDEO] Mister Heavenly cover Misfits’ “Hybrid Moments”

I’ve managed to avoid hearing anything about SXSW 2011 that’s so awesome that I would rip my hair out. But now that I’m digging through Youtube to find some gems, I doubt that’ll stay the case for long. Mister Heavenly (Honus from Man Man, Nick from Islands/the Unicorns, Joe from Modest Mouse and Michael Cera from the movie screen) have been covering this Misfits song for a few months but somehow I forgot to ever post it. The recording quality is great, so I figured this is a great time to share it with you guys. Here’s Mister Heavenly tackling the Misfits’ “Hybrid Moments.”

John Darnielle covers “Power in a Union” for WI teachers

John Darnielle of the Mountain Goats has always been a bit political on his twitter account, but yesterday he upped it a notch by recording this cover of “Power in a Union” for the Wisconsin teachers’ union. The song was written in 1913 by Joe Hill, recorded much later by Billy Bragg and brought up again yesterday. It’s quite the anthem and I hope it gives the teachers a bit of encouragement.

[MP3] Cymbals Eat Guitars cover GBV’s “Gleemer”

Good news, everyone! Cymbals Eat Guitars will be recording their second album later this month, to be released on Barsuk later this year. To celebrate, we’ve got this fantastic cover of Guided By Voices’ “Gleemer” to jam all weekend year long.

[VIDEO] BOAT covers T Rex’s “Children of the Revolution”

A lot of people love to cover T Rex. A lot. But BOAT doing “Children of the Revolution” is one of my favorite recent ones (the best still goes to Elf Power doing “20th Century Boy” in Lexington).

So here’s the deal: BOAT are offering up a preorder of their upcoming record Dress Like Your Idols. If you take ’em up on it, you get “Hiss Like Your Idols,” a cassette of demos and covers like the one above. Snag that at Magic Marker’s web site.

[MP3] Elephant 6 Holiday Surprise tour covers Sun Ra

Sloan over at Southern Shelter posted a bootleg of the Elephant 6 Holiday Surprise show in Atlanta. Included among the dozens of great songs is this cover of Sun Ra’s “Enlightenment.” It’s some jazz madness at the end of a ton of great rock and pop. Enjoy!

[VIDEO] My Morning Jacket cover Wham’s “Careless Whisper” in NYC

Like I said, this is a great time to be a My Morning Jacket fan. They just finished their five nights playing all their albums in New York and they’re about to play Louisville this weekend. This has also given the band a reason to pull out some old covers. Here’s MMJ doing a cover of Wham’s “Careless Whisper” in NYC, which is, I believe, the first time they’ve done it since 2006.

the Ted Leo/Rx covers archive :: 56 covers and counting!

Ted Leo’s new album the Brutalist Bricks is out tomorrow and to celebrate I put together a collection of his covers. Now, normally it takes me quite a long time of bugging people, poking around message boards and going through old hard drives to come up with these lists. But this time I’ve got to give credit to the user madastronautkg at the Timorous Me message board for compiling the vast majority of these.

So spend today downloading and enjoying these covers, then tomorrow go pick up a copy of the Brutalist Bricks. And as always, if you’ve got a cover I don’t have included here, email me or drop a link in the comments! [and use Down ThemAll to snag all these at once!]

the Decemberists covers archive :: 56+ covers and counting!

So it turns out that I really enjoy putting together these covers archives. It gives me a chance to rediscover the depth of influences of some of my favorite bands and — in cases like this — rediscover how great the band is.

I used to be a HUGE Decemberists junkie. I’m still a fan, but about five years ago they would easily have ranked in my top five favorite groups still making music. I’ve dropped slightly on the fandom radar, but have always kept up with the group. So for that reason I knew they had to be next on my list to assemble a collection of their covers. They’ve been performing for years and have always delighted fans with a wide range of covers. I mean really, it’s everything from Kate Bush to the Modern Lovers over here…

For starters, we’ve got Colin’s three covers EPs, songs by Morrissey, Shirley Collins and Sam Cooke, then a complete list of all the Decemberists covers I could find.
