[mp3] Of Montreal: “Fell In Love With a Girl”

Some kind readers send me the rip of Of Montreal’s cover of the White Stripes as soon as I posted a request for it. You guys are great. Too bad I spaced on posting it until today. But better late than never. Here’s Of Montreal tackling the classic White Stripes song.

It’s no secret that I love covers. And really, I doubt there’s a bigger debt owed by cover lovers in the 2010s than that to The Onion’s AV Club. This cover of the White Stripes’ “Fell In Love with a Girl” by Of Montreal is the product of that wonderful project. Thanks to Cover Me for the tip.

And as soon as someone gets me an MP3 of this, I’ll add it to the collection!

[mp3/video] St. Vincent covers Big Black’s “Kerosene”

[mp3/video] St. Vincent covers Big Black’s “Kerosene”

MP3: St Vincent – Kerosene (Big Black; live)

There are many reasons to live in Big Cities. One is that Sonora, Kentucky is never going to have a show like what happened last night in New York. All sorts of critically acclaimed indie/alternative bands got together to cover punk classics to honor the 10th anniversary of Michael Azerrad’s Our Band Could Be Your Life: Scenes from the American Indie Underground 1981-1991. There are some expected covers like Ted Leo covering Minor Threat, Dirty Projectors doing Black Flag and Titus Andronicus doing the Replacements… but this cover of Big Black’s “Kerosene” by St Vincent takes the cake. I could sleep for the next ten hours and have had a fantastic day just from this video. Cute little Annie screaming out “there’s kerosene around, find something to do” is just insanely great.

Finally! I knew they’d been doing this one on their spring tour, but had never seen video or audio proof of it until today. Here’s Of Montreal covering “My Funny Valentine,” sung by their drummer Clayton! Thanks to TBP for the video.

And if you haven’t already downloaded the 90 covers from the Of Montreal covers archive, now would be a good time to do that!

[mp3] Shaky Snakes: “It Sure Is Fun in the City”

[mp3] Shaky Snakes: “It Sure Is Fun in the City”

I have this terrible habit of leaving 7+ tabs open in Chrome as I’m browsing. It’s like a weird to-do list from the internet. Right now I have tabs open about travel, two about making a favicon, a recipe I want to try, a Pitchfork story, an interesting cover … and this song from Shaky Snakes that I first listened to on Friday. So even though I have some wildly inefficient ways of getting things done, in a weird way it helps me check out great new music like this.

There’s a weird lesson to be learned from me finding, enjoying and posting about Shaky Snakes. The first time he emailed me there was no subject and I never opened it. The next time he emailed me with the subject “haze pop” and I opened it immediately. The first thing to learn from that is that you should always put a good subject on your emails. The second is that Shaky Snakes are some good, hazy pop music.

Shaky Snakes also recorded a cover of Best Coast’s Sun Was High (So Was I) on his iPad.
