I keep forgetting that longtime YANP buddy Ivana XL changed her performing name to Eddi Front. Because of that, I keep missing a lot of news about her because I scroll right past it on Google Reader. That’s exactly what happened with this recent video for her song “Gigantic,” but fortunately I found it shortly after it debuted.

There’s a good essay to be written about artists who change their name. Eddi/Ivana did it here just like Lana Del Rey did it not long ago. Every artist’s reason is different, but it makes me wonder how much of it is a case where the artist was spinning their wheels and decided to “reboot” with a different band name for traction — after all, Jethro Tull are only called that because that was the name they played under on the night they were good enough to be invited back to the club.

But with Eddi Front, Ivana doesn’t seem to have changed anything but her name. There’s no Stefani Germanotta/Lady Gaga kind of reinvention here. She’s still a girl with a beautiful voice and delicate songs. Here’s hoping that this new name and new attention means a long career for Eddi Front and more material for us.
