Daikaiju @ Green Lantern 11.6.12
November 8th, 2012 by Matt
I spent the end of my election night watching a band from Alabama dress up in Japanese masks and play surf-punk in a Kentucky punk bar. Does it get more diverse (and therefore American) than that? I doubt it.
Daikaiju came highly recommended to me from my friend Matt who does the surf music show on WRFL. They seemed like some crazy Peelander-Z kind of fun, so I gave it a shot. Turns out that Peelander-Z was a pretty good reference point for their show. At no point where Daikaiju playing an ordinary set. At any given moment they would be crowd-surfing, mooning the crowd or wandering into the (empty) womens restroom, shutting the door and playing from in there. They were some active fellows for sure.
Unfortunately as with a lot of “you’ve got to see ‘em live” acts, Daikaiju are pretty much all about the visuals. They’re a memorable act, but there’s not a lot about their songs that will stick with you once it gets quiet afterward.
