The Roots @ Bonnaroo 6.9.12
June 18th, 2012 by Matt
Seeing the Roots open a massive festival set with a lengthy cover of the Beastie Boys’ “Paul Revere” was a bit of a magical moment for me — especially since the B-Boys’ last set ever took place on that exact same Bonnaroo stage three years ago. It was especially touching since the Roots are a group that appreciate both good music (hence the cover) and good people (the tribute to MCA’s passing).
Having just seen The Roots put on one of the best shows I’ve ever attended (Roots @ the Mohawk), this show had a high standard to live up to. And true to the nature of photographing music festivals like Bonnaroo, I only got to see the first 15 minutes of their set. Still, I’ll take 15 minutes with the Roots over a full set by nearly every other band on the planet. These guys raise performing to a higher level. They’re the tightest band I know that never sounds stiff.
