Black Star @ Bonnaroo 6.8.12
June 13th, 2012 by Matt
There were a lot of hip hop artists at Bonnaroo in different stages of their career. Ludacris has been a major star for a decade now; Danny Brown and Yelawolf are young, critically acclaimed artists; Childish Gambino’s got a meteoric rise that’s probably due to his ability to attract a lot of people who aren’t usually hip hop fans. Black Star, the union of Mos Def* and Talib Kweli, is in a pretty unique spot in this lineup. They’ve been a critically lauded duo who are both MC’s MCs. Still, they aren’t exactly the most commercially successful. You might even argue that Mos Def and Talib Kweli are more famous for being Mos Def and Talib Kweli than they are for being rappers. However, ever everyone who is familiar with them but not their work could have seen this Bonnaroo show I’m sure all that would change. These guys aren’t about swagger; they’re about style and substance. And boy, was that a welcome change.
*yes, I know he doesn’t go by that any longer, but realistically he’ll always be Mos Def
