Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings@ Bonnaroo 6.8.12
June 10th, 2012 by Matt
Between the Dap-Kings and The Roots (more on them later), this year’s Bonnaroo was full of R&B-inspired backing bands that work so well together that “tight” doesn’t really begin to do it justice. During their opening warm-up, I began wondering who’d win in a battle of the bands between those two groups. But really, who cares when you get to see both of them perform on beautiful days?
Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings continue to be our strongest contemporary link to the golden era of soul music. At this point they feel like less of a retro act and more of a continuation of that legacy. I have no doubt that if James Brown or Otis Redding could take in a SJ&DK show today, they’d leave impressed.
