[SXSW] Gary Clark Jr @ the Mohawk 3.17.12

April 5th, 2012 by Matt

Some friends and I got to the Mohawk just as Gary Clark Jr was starting. There was a long line, but the Mohawk’s surprising size easily swallowed up the line to allow us entry. I had never listened to GCJ, but we were constantly selling his EP at the record store — likely because it’s only $5 or something hilariously low. Even though I’m the last person you’ll ever hear saying “let’s listen to some blues rock!” I really enjoyed his set. He’s less of a Stevie Ray Vaughan disciple and more of a classic rock guy. He had a good guitar solo in one of his songs and a great drum solo shortly after it.

After getting home I went and sought out his debut EP. I’m glad I remembered to do so, because that thing is stacked with great songs. Every time I play it at work someone mistakes the first track for the Black Keys.
