Mister Heavenly @ Cosmic Charlies 11.11.11
November 14th, 2011 by Matt

Lexington, you made me proud on Friday. We got a rare treat — a performance from the indie rock supergroup Mister Heavenly — and you turned out in full force to take in the show. Not only that, but everyone was up front and enthusiastic for the entire show. And that part’s not hard to believe. When your band is composed of three pros whose separate bands are all pretty famous for great live shows, it’s no surprise their joint effort is worth standing up for.

Let me get the only bad things out of the way early so I can spend the rest of this post raving. The first thing that hurt Mister Heavenly just a touch was the lack of a bassist. Ryan and Nick traded times where I felt like one or the other was doing the heavy lifting that could be filled in with a bassist. The other isn’t anything that can really be helped (yet) — they’ve only got one album under their belt.
OK, back to the good stuff. These three guys work together so well that I can’t believe this isn’t each of their main band. And though it’s been said dozens of times in each review, I have to echo the same thought that brought Nick and Ryan together in the first place: their voices sound amazing together. Tracks like “Bronx Sniper” and “Reggae Pie” get half of their live punch from the vocals swap.

Toward the end of the set we were treated to a cover of Cody Chesnutt’s “Look Good in Leather” with vocals from Nick. They first did this cover months ago, so I was prepared for it, but you never know if they’re going to pull it out or not. Still a pleasant surprise. Similarly, they ended the encore by letting Ryan go crawling through the crowd with a cover of the Misfits’ “Hybrid Moments.” For a band that’s not that wild on record, their live show sure had its crazy moments. Let’s also not forget that a girl in the front row spent about a song and a half topless — the second time a girl in Lexington has been naked at a Ryan/Honus Honus show.

After the jump you can see a goofy photo I took of Mister Heavenly and Mr. Dream after the show.
Lots more photos after the break
After the show Nick spotted a “Mr. Taxi” cab fueling up at the Speedway behind Cosmic Charlies. I jokingly suggested a Mr Dream/Mister Heavenly/Mr Taxi photo. Nick took to the idea and grabbed everyone for a quick shot.
