Your Guide to Boomslang 2011

September 21st, 2011 by Matt

Here’s a quick overview of the shows happening at Boomslang this year. For information on non-band related events, check out Boomslang’s website. You can pick up tickets at CD Central, UK’s ticket outlet or at the doors of the venues.

Friday at Cosmic Charlies: Those Darlins

Boomslang is getting started off right, with an evening show at Cosmic Charlies that brings together the americana/rock blend of Those Darlins, the psych-rock blend of Scott Carney from Wax Fang, and local favorites Onward Pilgrim. Get to Cosmic Charlie’s at 8pm to make sure you’ve got a spot at this opening show!

Those Darlins: “Be Your Bro”

Friday at Green Lantern: Cough

Those other Friday night bands not exactly your thing? Check out this show at the Green Lantern to fulfill your metal and hard rock needs. Cough is teaming up with locals They Yearn for What They Fear, Below and Stampede for a night of fierceness. This show’s 21+ and kicks off around 9pm.

Friday night at Cosmic Charlies: Big Freedia has CANCELED!

Bit of an update since I started writing this post: Big Freedia has canceled their Boomslang performance due to health issues. But still, locals Miss Cass and John the Baptist will be putting together a dance party after Those Darlins’ show.

Saturday afternoon at Bar Lexington: Ty Segall

I don’t know what’s craziest about this afternoon show: the fact that it’s got such a great lineup or that it’s happening so early. Fingers crossed that all the Ty Segall fans can wake up by noon.

Noon: Street Gnar
1 p.m.: Ty Segall
2 p.m.: Pujol
3 p.m.: Woodsman
4 p.m.: Delicate Steve
5 p.m.: RC Pro Am

Ty Segall: “Finger”

Saturday night at Buster’s: Swans

For most people I’ve talked to, this is the show of Boomslang. Swans are doing a rare performance, backed up by Pelican and Secret Chiefs 3. Even if you’re only slightly interested in these acts, you’ll want to go check this show out. Because if in two months you find yourself as a huge Swans or Secret Chiefs 3 fan, you’ll really want to kick yourselves.

Swans: “My Birth”

Saturday night at Cosmic Charlies: MEN

Now that Big Freedia is off the Boomslang lineup, Saturday night at Cosmic Charlies has the “Best Dance Party” award on lock. MEN are no doubt going to be a must-see, with SSION and Ellie Harring only beefing up the night’s lineup.

MEN: “Off Our Backs”

Sunday afternoon at Natasha’s: R Stevie Moore

This one’s really breaking my heart that I have to work on Sunday afternoon. Unless this show runs really late, I’m going to have to miss out on a fantastic show. Lo-fi, home-recording hero R Stevie Moore is headlining a bill that also features Julianna Barwick and Hong Shao’s Pipa Club

R Stevie Moore: “I Like To Stay Home”

Sunday evening: Lexington Fashion Collaborative Neighborhood Series

This art show features performances from locals Englishman, Matt Duncan, Coralee and the Townies and Best Friends Band.

Sunday night at Buster’s: Tom Tom Club

Sunday night at Buster’s is the show that catches anyone who wasn’t interested in a single show before now. If you aren’t into Swans or Those Darlins, you’ve got to agree with me when I say that Tom Tom Club and Psychedelic Furs are pretty awesome. Bonus points if you yell out “I love you Tina!” during every Tom Tom Club song break (actually, don’t do that).

Tom Tom Club: “Wordy Rappinghood” (live)
