Guided By Voices w/ Neko Case @ Pitchfork 7.15.11
July 18th, 2011 by Matt
I expected Guided By Voices’ set to be a drunken, but nostalgicly great, mess. It was a bit of that, but mostly just a powerful set by a classic act that I never expected to see live. They group were so fierce in 2011 that it made me wonder how incredible it would’ve been to see them in the mid-90s.
The first treat of GBV’s set was that they were joined by Neko Case for their first song. Sure, she played the “cameo clown” role — a term I’ve heard musicians pass use for their appearance to sing and shake a tambourine with a different group — but it was a great guest appearance.
But my biggest wish of all was fulfilled: we got tons of stuff from Bee Thousand. The biggie, “I Am a Scientist,” was saved for late in the set, but there were scatterings throughout. “Gold Star for Robot Boy” was great, but I think yelling out during the chorus of “Hot Freaks” was too much fun not to take the prize of best moment.
