My Morning Jacket @ Bonnaroo 6.10.11

June 12th, 2011 by Matt

In my experience, there’s no such thing as a bad My Morning Jacket show. However, when their last three Bonnaroo sets have the kind of concerts that convert attendees into lifelong fans and this time they get two hours before the headliner… it feels like a bit of a missed opportunity. Their 2008 show was nealry four hours, while this finished after almost half that.

But take this with a giant grain of salt. What you’re reading now is the post-midnight ramblings of a big My Morning Jacket fan. The show was undeniably great; it just never hit the legendary status I know they can achieve.

The best treat of their Bonnaroo set was the inclusion of a few familiar guests. The Preservation Hall Jazz Band pepped up “Holdin On to Black Metal” and “Highly Suspicious,” after Ben Sollee joined the group for “Wonderful.” I wish every show could have those two guest inclusions, but I guess it’d be a little less special if that ever happened.

great stuff. i wonder if you would have made a great deadhead. hmmm. that’s what was around in the 89-90 when i was hitting shows left and right. 4 hour shows with space in between. i’m sure you’ve heard it. would love to hear what you think of their music.

Matt, I have to disagree with you a bit. I didn’t like their show in 2008 and thought this one was phenomenal. They packed as much as they could in 2 hours, though I was hoping for a bad-ass cover or Win Butler guest appearance.

BTW, how many sets did Ben Sollee sit in on? I saw him with Nicole Atkins and the Black Sea on Sunday and heard he was at a few others besides MMJ.

Brian: Hmm. I saw him with Justin Townes Earle. Not sure if there were any more. Three’s a lot, though!
