Japanese-born avant garde percussionst Tatsuya Nakatani regularly collaborates with local musicians at his tour stops; however, the Nakatani Gong Orchestra (N.G.O.) is a relatively new project, in which he conducts an orchestra of five musicians (most of whom he has never met prior to that day) as they play gongs from his personal collection (many of which are 40 inches large), using stands, mallets and bows that are hand-made by Nakatani himself.
The show, presented by long-running avant garde, jazz and improv series Outside the Spotlight (aka Sir Ross Compton), will feature a solo performance by Nakatani followed by a group performance featuring members of local groups Everyone Lives, Everyone Wins, Merkaba, and Angelmaker. Nakatani has made a handful of appearances in Lexington over the past few years, and his performances are reportedly quite raw, visceral and unforgettable.
