Thanks to SMS for reminding me that Blackalicious’ first new song in five years, “Toy Jack,” is available for download thanks to Target’s “the Christmas Gig.” I wouldn’t say it’s unbelievable how good this song is — it is Blackalicious after all — but let’s just say that it’s most likely even better than you’re guessing a Blackalicious song about XMas would be.
Yesterday I was passed this track by Germany’s CHAMPIONS (or Champions — I never saw it written in anything but all caps). Here’s the first track off their self-titled record.
MP3: CHAMPIONS – Changes
“Changes” sounds like a version of Phoenix that’s a little more into the 80s side of pop. The best part of that means that there’s a sweet bass line running all through the song. I wish the best for these guys because it’d mean years more of good music from them.
Super excited that the Man Man/Islands collaboration Mister Heavenly has found a happy home for their debut album. In 2011 they’ll be bringing their “doom wop” tunes to Sub Pop. Aaaawesome.

A friend just sent me a link to the new Painted Palms EP and I’m really impressed. Also it seemed a bit familiar, then I remembered I had it on my list to check out thanks to IGIF. So check out this sample and then head over to their Bandcamp page and download the whole thing for free!
While in Brazil, the Apples in Stereo decided to film a quick video for “Strange Solar System” at a science themed playground. Pretty fitting, huh?
MOKB just premiered this new track from Young Man. He’s the new Frenchkiss signee, so you’d better take this moment to get acquainted before he blows the hell up.
MP3: Young Man – Strangers
I doubt the guys in Animal Collective will ever do any production work, but if they ever let their Beach Boys loving side run wild and produced a chamber pop vocal-heavy group, this would probably be the outcome. Also there’s some beautiful Dirty Projectors-esque guitar in here that just shines so bright I can feel it through my speakers.
It is a bit better in theory that it is in practicality, but it’s still nice that it happened.
