[MP3] new Of Montreal: “Coquet Coquette”

June 25th, 2010 by Matt

After what seems like an eternity, but really is quite quickly after it was finished, Of Montreal have released the first single off False Priest. No surprise — it’s “Coquet Coquette,” the song they’ve been performing the longest off this record.

MP3: Of Montreal – Coquet Coquette
“Coquet Coquette” has one of the sharpest guitar parts Of Montreal have written in years. The opening riff pops in throughout the song, but mostly leaves Kevin a lot of room during the verses to lament his relationship with this coquette.

There’s a lot to love in this song, but I’ve got to say that I’m most enjoying the opportunity to catch all the lyrics. Still my favorite: “Coquet coquette, you know I won’t forget how you made me cry to prove I was dutiful.” And of course, that’s to say nothing of the bold production choices. The spaced-out solo is like George Clinton getting a laugh out of twisting the knobs on Prince’s soundboard. I’m curious to see if they let BP do some of his psych-rock guitar solos during that section in concert or if they turn it into a Dottie keyboard solo.
