Stephin Merritt to write, perform live score for silent film “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea”

June 8th, 2010 by Matt

I’ve always thought it was super cool when bands would compose and perform live scores to accompany old silent films but I’ve never been able to catch one. Aside from the Deerhoof/”Heaven And Earth Magic” pairing (part of which was cannibalized for Friend Opportunity), this seems like the best one you could catch:

From House of Tomorrow:
Stephin Merritt recently completed a live score to the rarely-screened 1916 silent film version of Jules Verne’s “20,000 Leagues Under The Sea.” Originally commissioned by the San Francisco Film Society, the score will be performed live by Stephin Merritt, Daniel Handler, Johnny Blood, and David Hegarty on June 9 at The Seattle Film Festival and on July 11 at a special fundraiser for the Silent Film Theatre in Los Angeles.
