Unfortunately I spent the last week and some change in the hospital, so I had to miss out on seeing the results of my contest to win a shopping spree with Of Montreal. The winner turned out to be none other than Zach from WLFY in Louisville. And luckily my good friend Saraya from Blueline was able to snap some photos of the two of them shopping and snag some quotes from BP about his LP choices (below).

10cc- Deceptive Bends “Most people think they’re a pretty benign group but at the beginning they were pretty experimental. They all could sing and write a good song. This album is poppy and extremely creative.”
New Favorites of George Jones “Anything by George Jones with a crew cut is worth getting.”
Van Dyke Parks – Jump
Robyn Hitchcock – Black Snake Diamond Role “This band is one of my all time faves and this record is fantastic.”
Hugo Largo – Drum “This album has this great ethnic, folky thing. Great Cover of ‘Fancy’ by the Kinks. Beautiful record.”
Let’s Active – Big Plans for Everybody “Great jangly, psychedelic pop record. Great guitar solos. Mitch Easter is an awesome guy.”
The Roches – The Roches “First Album. The Roches are three sisters from New Jersey: Maggie, Terre, and Suzzy. Kinda folksy but they do really crazy harmonies and great vocals. I recently revisited it and it’s my new favorite album. Maggie’s my favorite.”
Slave – The Hardness of the World “Slave is a funk band with kind of a rock edge.”
Albert Collins – Cold Snap “Collins is one of the best blues guitar players. This one has some cool, stringy guitar.”

Read what Zach had to say about the experience after the jump.

Vinyl shopping with BP from Of Montreal was an amazing experience as I’m a huge fan of the band and purchasing vinyl. The combination is a perfect storm. As many vinyl lovers know, the shopping experience is pretty much going through the same motions, checking the stacks you know, the surprise coming from what gems might be in the pile. YANP’s shopping contest was interesting on two fronts…first having the opportunity to pick BP’s mind about the up-coming Of Montreal release and what contemporary music he was enjoying (Janelle Monae). The process of having another person select music for you is quite odd, but very educational and in the end a great deviation from the vinyl shopping routine. BP asked me what I enjoyed and went from there, a vocal journey into a history of music that was unknown to me with genre boundaries not present. I suggest everyone who loves buying vinyl take a friend and have them flip for you, explaining albums you don’t know about…and pick a couple up. This weekend I put on the records that I had probably flipped past before for the first time. The result was great, a whole world of music, artists, and their history was opened up to me. As I always say, music is discovery, and being part of this contest definitely reaffirms my love for vinyl, musical discovery, and Of Montreal.

Thanks YANP and BP

-Zach
