[MP3s] You Ain’t No Picasso’s favorite songs of April 2010

Is it already May? Man, festival season is right around the corner. So while we’re all loading up our playlists and burning CDs for trips to Bonnaroo, Pitchfork and everywhere in between this summer, here’s a fistful of jams to help make the sunny months go a little smoother. These are some of the best tracks I discovered in April of this year.

MP3: Disa – Fast Train

Why you should care: Because the song is fantastic. If the rest of the album is at least half this good, I’m down to put it on my favorite albums of the year list right now.

When it’ll impact your life: Your guess is as good as mine. If anybody’s got a concrete release date, shoot it over.

MP3: Gauntlet Hair – Our Scenery
MP3: Gauntlet Hair – I Was Thinking…

Why you should care: Because Gauntlet Hair are one of the most novel, yet quality groups I’ve heard in a while. As I said originally, it sounds like Chris Taylor producing Neon Indian.

When it’ll impact your life: GvB’s Forest Family Records will be putting out these two songs on 7″ within a month or so.

MP3: The Butchers – You a Liah

Why you should care: Because they’re a fresh young group from my hometown with a good live show.

When it’ll impact your life: They’ve got a CD available now. Hit ’em up on Myspace if you want a copy.

MP3: Hot Chip – She Wolf (Shakira cover)

Why you should care: Hot Chip. Covering Shakira. How do I need to sell you on this?

When it’ll impact your life: Seems like it’s already made as much of an impact as it’s going to. Unlikely that this’ll see a real release.

MP3: Woods – Blood Dries Darker

Why you should care: Because At Echo Lake is getting all kinds of praise from the far corners of the internet and this track is for sure a gem.

When it’ll impact your life: At Echo Lake is out next week (May 11) at your local record store.

MP3: Besnard Lakes – And This Is What We Call Progress

Why you should care: Because it sounds like the glorious union of Radiohead, R.E.M. and Broken Social Scene. It’s maybe the most epic rock song I’ve heard this year and absolutely killed live at SXSW.

When it’ll impact your life: OK, so I’m a bit behind on this one. It blew me away at SXSW so I went back and gave it repeated spins upon getting home. Not having a copy on my computer led to its unfortunate omission from the March list, which is when The Besnard Lakes Are the Roaring Night hit stores. Make up for my mistake by picking it up ASAP!

MP3: Burnt Ones – Gonna Listen to T Rex All Night Long

Why you should care: It’s the inaugural release by Roaring Colonel, MOKB‘s label and the group clearly loves T Rex.

When it’ll impact your life: they’ve got a 7″ out now that you can snag from Roaring Colonel.

MP3: Deerhoof – Hitch Hike (LiLiPUT cover)

Why you should care: Because it’s YANP-favorite Deerhoof covering one of their favorite groups, LiLiPUT. I’m always down for new Deerhoof, especially when it’s a fun cover.

When it’ll impact your life: Pick up the “Rules to Rock By” soundtrack and enjoy!

MP3: Avi Buffalo – Remember Last Time

Why you should care: Because Avi Buffalo sounds like all the best pop Sub Pop has been putting out for the last 8 years mixed into one group.

When it’ll impact your life: Just came out last week. Snag it without delay!
