[MP3s] You Ain’t No Picasso’s favorite songs of March 2010

[MP3s] You Ain’t No Picasso’s favorite songs of March 2010

I’m going to blame being a week late on March’s mix on the fact that the weather has been unbearably beautiful in Kentucky for the past few days. It’s a drag to get anything done that doesn’t involve the outdoors, drinking or watching horses. Seriously, it’s not a stereotype; that’s what we do when it’s pretty here. Luckily we also listen to great music while we do those things — and that’s something we can all get behind. Let’s do just that, shall we? Here’s the songs that made March of 2010 great.

MP3: Ted Leo – Woke Up Near Chelsea

Why you should care: Because Ted Leo’s new record The Brutalist Bricks is his best in years. Tracks like “Woke Up Near Chelsea” find our old favorite artist writing outside his comfort zone and the result pays off huge dividends.

When it’ll impact your life: Now. If you haven’t picked up the new TL/Rx record, I highly suggest it. It’s in stores and on iTunes.

MP3: Broken Bells – the Ghost Inside

Why you should care: The new Broken Bells record is a grower for sure. I only really like about 1/3 of the record, but “The Ghost Inside” is a really great song. Great production (thanks, DM!) and great melody (you rule, JM!). It’s the one song where they truly are better together than apart.

When it’ll impact your life: This one’s out already, too. Pick it up and spend some time soaking it in like I have.

MP3: Portugal. The Man – 60 Years

Why you should care: Because it’s yet another fantastic pop song from Portugal. The Man. I had a hard time picking just one track from this record (“When The War Ends,” “All My People” and “1000 Years” were also in the running), but this one is just tops.

When it’ll impact your life: their newest LP, American Ghetto, is available for purchase already. Pick it up soon or you’ll get left behind when they release two more EPs and another full length album later this year.

[MP3] Still Flyin: “Runaway Train II”

MP3: Still Flyin – Runaway Train

Why you should care: Because this song is my mover and shaker of 2010 so far. If I need to motivate myself to do something more physically exerting than typing on my laptop, this track can get it done. Favorite bass line of 2010? Maybe.

When it’ll impact your life: Now. They’ve got a 7″ available with this jam and one other.

MP3: Cults – Go Outside
MP3: Cults – Most Wanted

Why you should care: The band so great I had to put two songs on here. Seriously, so far these two tracks are the two to beat for song of the year. They’re impossibly fresh sounding and still manage to have a fairly broad appeal. I hate to feed into the hype machine, but it couldn’t be more deserved.

When it’ll impact your life: Thanks to Chris at Gorilla vs Bear, right this moment! Their 7″ is the inaugural release on his new record label.

MP3: Iretsu – Humbuzzer

Why you should care: Because it sounds like Deerhoof + some guy who likes Sparks. Weird combo? You bet.

When it’ll impact your life: Free download available now. Album out this June.

MP3: Ivana XL – Couch Surfing

Why you should care: Because it’s another in the progression of snazzy new Ivana XL tunes.

When it’ll impact your life: Honestly I’ve kind of lost track. Her release schedule is so wonky that I’m fairly sure she looses track sometimes. I’m pretty sure this one is from a compilation due out this June, but she’s got a new EP out this month.

MP3: Absofacto – Gnat Years

Why you should care: It’s the dude from Mason Proper getting all bedroom-pop in his spare time. That last Starlight Mints record was a snooze, so this is filling in my off-kilter pop requirements that were left a bit deficient last year.

When it’ll impact your life: He’s releasing songs slowly on his site, but I’m sure a full length can’t be far off. Until then, there’s a donate button on there…

MP3: Jonsi – Go Do

Why you should care: Because it’s Sigur Ros’ frontman getting to delight us yet again. Plus the production and vocals are absolutely spectacular.

When it’ll impact your life: New record is out this month. Also he’s touring the US (not that he’s playing anywhere near me…)

MP3: Blitzen Trapper – Heaven and Hell

Why you should care: New Blitzen Trapper, man! If that alone doesn’t get your blood pumping, I’m not sure what else I can do for you.

When it’ll impact your life: Destroyer of the Void comes out June 8

MP3: Ariel Pink – Round and Round

Why you should care: Because I’ve never really cared for Ariel Pink, then I listened to this song, now I do. What better selling point is there??

When it’ll impact your life: the 7″ is out April 26, full length out later this spring.

MP3: Holy Fuck – Latin America

Why you should care: Because it sounds like Holy Fuck have really brought it to the next level on Latin.

When it’ll impact your life: Holy Fuck’s new LP Latin is out May 11
