[SXSW] Suckers @ Galaxy Room 3.20.10

March 28th, 2010 by Matt

I made some joke on Twitter about seeing Local Natives and then running off to drink and kill time for two hours until Les Savy Fav came on. Fortunately I’m not quite as cynical and snarky as I might occasionally like to pretend to be. For instance, I was actually really looking forward to catching Suckers even though I’d never heard a note of their music. I had this distant whisper of a memory that a few friends may have told me they were worth checking out, so I stayed up front to check them out. Glad I did, since they were probably my favorite discovery of SXSW.

Only going on what I saw at SXSW, I’d expect that Suckers’ record is going to sound like someone took a folk-rock band and only let them listen to Spencer Krug’s discography for about a year and a half and then set them loose on the world. They put on a strong show that kept me entertained for the whole time despite not knowing a lick of their music. Here’s hoping I can catch them again after I get to familiarize myself with their studio work.

just a heads up for all you Suckers-lovers out there… go listen to Quinn Walker’s (Sucker’s main songwriter) solo record from a few years back… Laughter’s An Asshole. One of my favorite records of the past few years.

Suckers-lovers…that’s a high sounding name for these guys.

Ditto on Justin’s comment. If nothing else, do it to hear the original version of “Save Your Love For Me”.
