[SXSW] jj @ the Mohawk 3.18.10
March 24th, 2010 by Matt

I hate to kick someone when they’re down, but jj’s set at the Mohawk was one of the most boring shows I’ve seen in a long time. After playing guitar for two short songs, jj put it down and pretty much sang karaoke to some pre-recorded backing tracks. Her hands weren’t empty, though, as she sipped on a beer through her entire set. As was, I was just killing time before Holy Fuck came on, but if I’d payed money or traveled just to see her I would have been extremely let down. If hundreds of unsigned bands can scrape together four members and throw them in a van, couldn’t jj, a critically acclaimed musician on a well known record label, convince two people to play live music with her? Or really, couldn’t she convince herself to keep playing guitar through her whole set?

their(there’s two of them) debut album was solid, but it was obvious it wasn’t meant to be heard in a live setting.

she was the same way at Big Ears. snoresville. though honestly, she looked so nervous it was like watching a car wreck, so i was strangely drawn to it.
