[MP3] Happy Hollows: “Under the Milky Way” (Church cover)

February 18th, 2010 by Matt

Apparently my blatant love of the new Happy Hollows record has paid off. Their label just asked if I’d like to premiere this cover of the Church’s “Under the Milky Way.” Uh, duh (and thanks!) guys.

MP3: The Happy Hollows – Under the Milky Way (The Church cover)

And if you, like me, couldn’t place this song at first, perhaps you know it from the Donnie Darko soundtrack.

Wow…that last sentence just made me feel very very old.

    Brilliant cover.

Bret: if it makes you feel better, when I wrote it it made me feel very silly for admitting I pretty much only knew it from DD.

Really really good. The Church’s album from 2009 ’23′ was brilliant, don’t miss it.

Or, as I know it, from the Church album, ‘Starfish’.
Why another cover of “Milky Way”? Seems like I heard it sung by a chick in a car commercial recently. I really wish people wouldn’t mess with this song. I’d hate to see it beat to death like ‘Hallelujah’ and ‘Love Will Tear Up Apart’.

Has it been covered to death? Whether or not it has, this is a perfect match for this band.

Yeah, Sia covered this recently as well. Incredible song.

Very nice cover, touching, and respectfully done. If this is an indication of HH influences, it only endears them to me more. I like the car comercial cover too. ;)

Nice score. One of the top 10 songs ever written. Up there with ‘Night and Day’ and ‘Space Oddity’. I welcome as many covers of it as you can throw at me.

@Bret – old? Donnie Darko isn’t even 10 years old! My wife bought the CD by The Church back when it was originally relased…in 1988!!

I think Bret meant that Matt ONLY knowing the song from DD made him feel old.

  • stytzer

    @Samantha…so do I…now :)

    Oops.

Being a huge fan of the Church, it’s really nice to hear anyone cover them, especially a band as good as the Happy Hollows. That being said, I’d love to hear some of the rest of the Church’s amazing catalogue worked up by others. This version is one of the better covers I’ve heard, definitely.
