the My Morning Jacket covers archive :: 70+ covers!

Though I was first introduced to them in 2003, it took a long time for me to be bitten by the My Morning Jacket bug. It wasn’t until I saw them at 2008’s Bonnaroo Music Festival that I really understood what all the madness was about. But now that I’m solidly one of the converted, I figured it’d be nice to collect all the covers I could find by My Morning Jacket and keep them in one convenient place.

The vast, vast majority of these are all live recordings of good to great quality. There are a few that don’t sound the best, but they’re worth having anyway. And though they aren’t quite up to Of Montreal numbers (86 covers!), there’s enough here to keep you busy for a while. So I suggest you grab DownThemAll, and download fifty covers of the best rock songs you could ever hope to hear done by one of the best bands still making music.

  1. When Jim was in Month of Sundays they used to cover Never tear us apart and it was good… the best was his cover of freaks of the industry!

  2. Careless Whisper by Wham and All Night Long by Lionel Ritchie – Both performed 12/31/06 at the SF Fillmore

  3. They played a killer cover of Charles Wright’s “Express Yourself” on New Year’s Eve last year at MSG. It’s an easy find on the internet. (I tried to email it, but I think I exceeded a file limit on your server or something,) There’s also a version of “It Makes No Difference” with Eddie Vedder floating around that’s pretty sweet.

  4. They had a CD of early demos come out around 2003 that included a really weird version of Berlin’s “Take My Breath Away.” I can’t remember if there were other covers on that album.

  5. Oops! Yeah, I had a full inbox this morning. If you wanted to give it another go, Brian, I’d appreciate it. Otherwise I think someone else said they were going to try to send me a ZIP file with a few covers I’m missing, including that one.

  6. Great work pulling these together -and thanks for the heads-up on DownloadThemAll (just what I’ve been looking for). One omission I noticed: Lead Me Father (Johnny Cash) – from the extra disc that came with initial copies of At Dawn. Wish I had the disc that came with Tennessee Fire too – anyone care to trade…?

Didn’t they do Celebration (Kool & The Gang?) at some point too? To be honest, I can leave that one off my ‘want list’ ;-) : “…one of the best bands still making music”; no doubt, but I’m gagging to hear some new MMJ material. MoF and Harrison covers feel like treading water for these guys.

  7. It’s been so long since I’ve seen them live, but this just reminded me of how they truly are the best live band I’ve ever seen.

  8. Matt – I just sent you an MP3 of MMJ Kool & The Gang cover “Get DOwn On It” from 2008 Roo – also included HomeSweetHome, but looksl like that was included already. Nice work!

  9. Here’s a boot of their New Years Eve show at MSG. They covered 10 songs that night, some of which you are missing.

  10. Sweet list, I have heard a hilarious MMJ version of “Wonderful Tonight” by Clapton. I got it from a Podcast on Itunes. He changes the lyrics around, it’s quite funny. Thanks for the compilation!

  11. MMJ does a cover of “Take My Breath Away” by Berlin, popularized by the movie Top Gun. I don’t have it, though.

  12. I was sold to MMJ three years ago at The Ryman..and was so lucky to see them at Bonnaroo 2008 and MSG New Years. So good to see people who love them as much!

  13. Great post. Along with “Take My Breath Away” (which I have somewhere) the list also is missing “West End Girls,” and I believe I DO know where that it. I will try to E-mail you the one (and maybe both) tomorrow. Thanks for putting this together. Fun stuff.

  14. Whoa. I’d love to hear “White Rabbit” (and the others, obviously). Definitely send those over if you get a chance!

    Thanks!

  15. I was converted during 2008’s Bonnaroo as well… Glad to hear someone fell in love with them the same time I did!

  16. What a great collection of songs. Thanks for this archive. I love the diversity in this selection of songs. Most bands have a handful of covers. My Morning Jacket has over 50. That tells you what kind of musicians they are.

  17. Wow! Thanks for the listing. I’m looking forward to checking these out. For the record, Blue Moon of Kentucky is by Bill Monroe, not Elvis.

  18. Great list, Matt! I fell for MMJ in 2005, the first time I saw them live–they just bring the goods.
