Of Montreal @ Monolith 9.12.09

September 27th, 2009 by Matt

I can’t decide if I need to see Of Montreal more or less. I see them so often (three times this year) that they don’t really have a chance to change up their live show very much. But at the same time I have a great desire to see them again if it’s been more than a couple months since my last Of Montreal show. And I think, that’s probably the biggest fuel behind Of Montreal’s innovation as well as the biggest obstacle.

Of Montreal’s live show is like a drug that’s battling demolishing results. Each time I see them, the rush is fantastic, but I (subconsciously) expect a bigger performance than the last time. And unless they’ve had a few months off to tweak the cinematics of their live show, it can come across like a movie I’ve already seen. And unfortunately their show at Red Rocks was a repeat, but luckily it was one of my favorites.

Any doubts I had about Of Montreal’s last record have slowly been erased by seeing them four times since I first heard it. Any song I had doubts about has proven itself as a fantastic live addition. In particular, “Women’s Studies Victims” has quickly risen to one of my favorites in their live performances. It’s a dramatic song that plays well with Of Montreal’s already-dramatic stage show. We did get a bit of Satanic Panic stuff as well, but unfortunately not “Vegan In Furs.” That song fits so well with their current sound, but I’m fairly sure I’ll never hear it again.

More photos after the break.
