I finally gave Betty Davis’ Nasty Gal reissue a spin today and (obviously) fell in love. I was going to whip up a post on one of my favorite songs on it, but when I went to Light in the Attic’s web site, I discovered something far more interesting. Betty Davis’ previously-unreleased fourth album Is It Love or Desire? is getting a release after 33 years on the shelf. So unless you were really tight with Betty or Miles, this will be your first chance to hear a cut off Betty’s fourth record, recorded in 1979.

Betty’s got a great voice, but she chooses to growl a bit on this crunching funk track. The backing sound a bit like Parliament and her vocals sound like a tiger pacing its cage. Two power packed similes in one? You bet. It’s full of fire, but I’d still suggest that newcomers start out with They Say I’m Different to get the best sampling possible.
