Having spent more time with These United States this year than I have with my own family (sorry, mom!), I’ve gotten a feel for the direction their live show usually goes. But like a favorite film or a running gag, they’re an experience that grows in fondness as it grows in familiarity. Their show at the WOXY stage of Monolith was a packed house, which answers my frequent question to them: “how’s attendance in other parts of the US?” It’s good to know they can fill a room in Kentucky, but it’s better to know that they can do it in every state.
Much like their show at Buster’s, the set started off with mostly Crimes-era songs before jumping into new territory. This time that was a slight bummer for me, since I had to run off to see Frightened Rabbit. But like I said, the old material is the most familiar, so it’s the most fond. And even though I wanted to hear all the live-oriented new stuff from Everything Touches Everything, the old stuff sounded great.
