[VIDEO] the Beatles perform A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Last night I was doing a bit of youtubing and ran across this selection from “Around the World with the Beatles.” It’s Paul, John, George and Ringo in 1963 doing the Pyramus & Thisbe play-within-a-play bit from A Midsummer Night’s Dream. George is the moonlight, Ringo’s the lion, Paul is Pyramus and John is a rather masculine version of the fair maiden Thisbe.

It’s spectacular not only because their clowning amateurism is pretty close to the performers in AMND’s text, but because the Beatles performing Shakespeare is as close as planet Earth has ever come to two groups that are the BEST at their art form working together. If you know of a pairing that can top the Beatles/Shakespeare (in theory, anyway), I’d love to hear it.

And, as if you needed reminding, the Beatles remasters and Rock Band are out today. Anyone going to snag them on opening day?
