Islands just shared the title track of their upcoming record Vapours with us and it was enough to cause me to whip out my laptop while at the CD Central booth at the University of Kentucky’s “K Week” celebrations. So feel honored, folks, I’m ignoring people in order to pay attention to you. (note to my boss: I did not actually ignore anyone, it took me like half an hour to write this post). Anyway, I’m getting away from my point. New Islands!

“Vapours” has a lot plainer base than the previously-released “No You Don’t” and that’s probably its strongest point. From that flat footing, Nick can craft a good melody and supplement it with one of the best horn backings I’ve heard in a long while. I think this might be one of Islands’ strongest tracks, and it’s also one of the shortest. I would say my hat’s off to Nick, but with regard to the Unicorns/Islands/Nick, it hasn’t been on in years.
