MF Doom @ Pitchfork 7.18.09

I thought that Doom's performance at Pitchfork was going to be one of those "never going to get this chance again, also it's very awesome" concert experiences. Unfortunately it was more like "well, at least I can check him off my 'Bands To See' list" shows. Not exactly inspiring. Pitchfork has a long history of booking the heroes of underground hip hop (ok, let's be honest -- also the hip hop that appeals to white people and hipsters). I've seen a load of great hip hop shows there (Ghostface Killah, Public Enemy, Aesop Rock & Mr. Lif, Clipse) and missed some other great ones (Cadence Weapon, the Cool Kids). However, MF Doom dropped the ball this year by being absolutely underwhelming. I don't know if I would chalk his boring Pitchfork show up to Doom sending up a look-alike who mouthed along to a prerecorded track (as I heard rumored), but whoever was on stage was completely listless. He shuffled across the stage with the microphone held so close to his mouth that it seemed glued there. Not even rapping classics like "Hoe Cakes" could help, though hearing the crowd yell out "SUPER!" at the appropriate times was pretty great. More photos after the break.
