Final Fantasy @ Pitchfork 7.18.09

July 23rd, 2009 by Matt

I hadn’t seen Owen Pallett since he played to about a dozen people in Cincinnati in 2006. Since then he’s expanded his reserve of songs and (exponentially?) expanded his fanbase. Other bands might have gotten jealous when they saw how excited the crowd of thousands got for this thin, sock-footed Canadian violinist, but at least they knew it was well deserved once he started playing.

His set was a fan-friendly mix of pretty much every album and EP. For the last song he asked if people wanted to hear an old song or a new one. Predictably, the crowd shouted out “Old!” and he smiled and picked up his violin. Unfortunately I was running by at the point and didn’t get to hear what song he played. Anyone able to help me out?

Also I have to give Owen props for wearing a Mayhem shirt. Here’s hoping he never makes a necklace with fragments of a former bandmate’s skull.

More photos after the break.
