[MP3] new Polyphonic Spree demo: “Apart”

July 22nd, 2009 by Matt

Tim DeLaughter just shared the second demo for the next Polyphonic Spree album. “Apart” has a little more in the way of production than “Blurry” (still nothing compared to a regular Spree album, though), lacing in fuzzy guitar chords and slight feedback.

Tim says “I think once you hear more of these demos you’ll come to find a very defined theme. One that is VERY important for me to express.” “Blurry” is a mixed bag of emotions (sadness over poor choices, but a call for reform and change) and “Apart” is, on initial listens, even more of a downer. I don’t get the feeling that the theme is “sadness and frowns,” but I do get the feeling we’ll have to pay more attention than usual to the lyrics on this album.

MP3: Tim DeLaughter – Apart (demo)

Continue reading below for a look at a lyric from “Apart” within the context of my interview with Tim.

And as a sidenote, I’d like to point out that a lyric in this song echoes something Tim said when I interviewed him in 2007. “Apart” mentions “grass growing in the street,” the same thing he told me inspired him to keep going.

From my interview with Tim

YANP: So with all that at the genesis, what things keep you going?

Tim:: I get inspired by the littlest things. I walk down the street and see a blade of grass growing in the concrete and that inspires me… I kind of always have tried to embrace life as much as possible and to accept its ups and downs no matter how far it goes. I think it’s an awesome ride. It can be a bitch sometimes, but when it works it’s really, really good and inspires me to keep going.

So maybe that line is the real take-away from the song: Be the blade of grass fighting through the concrete — prosper and inspire.
