John Oliver @ Bonnaroo 6.14.09
July 8th, 2009 by Matt

John Oliver was just fantastic at Bonnaroo. The comedy tent audience is always a little generous to comedians (what with there being nary a sober soul in the house), but he didn’t need the leeway. He gently kidded with the Bonnaroo audience about the ridiculousness of the festival, the overwhelming power of American consumerism and problems with the Australian voting system. That last one might seem out of place, but it got some of the biggest laughs of his set. Apparently Australians are given the day off in order to vote, so lots of people begin drinking early in the morning and are drunk when they cast their ballot (He observed: “You’ve got more in common with Australians than you thought, Bonnaroo!”)
At the end of his set he went into a bit from his standup special that I remembered, so I excused myself to make sure I was ready for Snoop Dogg.
