Erykah Badu @ Bonnaroo 6.14.09

Erykah Badu was an unfortunate victim of the "making us wait too GD long" flu at Bonnaroo. I would chalk it up to some technical issues or something, but her band played an unchanging 30-second groove for around seven minute waiting for her to come out on stage -- and that was
after they played Lil Wayne's "A Milli" all the way through while the band just sat there. But oh well, the show was great once it started.
I might be the least qualified person to write about Erykah Badu, but that's not going to stop me. Partially because my opinions are valid no matter how much of her work I've digested (just her last album and assorted singles), but mostly because I loved her show.

When I left her show I felt like everyone in the crowd must've been raised a step or two on their emotional ladder. I mean, how could they not? Erykah Badu played some incredibly beautiful songs and said some incredibly beautiful things in between. Normally when a band does anything but play music, I get a little bored, but I could have listened to her read poetry in the sun all afternoon. She had sly words to share between songs, be they prepared or off the cuff. And frankly, I realized then what a treasure she was and felt foolish for living 23 years unaware of that.
