Booker T and the Drive-By Truckers @ Bonnaroo 6.13.09

One of the best surprises of the festival was how great Booker T and the Drive-By Truckers sounded. I’m a loose fan of both, but didn’t pick up their new collaborative album Potato Hole and hadn’t heard a thing from it until Bonnaroo. Those songs, the DBT songs and especially Booker T’s songs sounded great.

Booker T and the Drive-By Truckers started off with two songs from Potato Hole before switching over to the DBT song “Homefield Advantage.” The crowd went nuts afterward and Booker T, as if to say “I’ve got a hit or two of my own…” led into one of the best known songs that would be played at Bonnaroo. He prefaced his absolutely classic song “Green Onions” by saying “This is a song I wrote as a senior in high school. It made me just enough money to go to college.” Boy, that’s one song I never thought I’d have the pleasure of hearing live and one that I never knew could sound so good.
