Be on the lookout for fellow Lost watchers today, guys. They’ll be the ones who can’t wait for 9pm to roll around and will check their watch every ten minutes until it does. I decided to curb my enthusiasm for the best show on television with a quick mix to get us all read. It’s lighthearted, but not so much to the point where I would use “Forever Young” about Richard Alpert.
MP3: Handsome Furs – I’m Confused
Let’s start with the obvious choice: Lost’s “WTF” quality. Everyone Lost fan — every single one — has had to have something explained or clarified. It took me two viewings of the episode where we realize Richard doesn’t age to realize that Richard doesn’t age! Lost is a beautiful but confusing show.
MP3: AC Newman – Battle for Straight Time
I guess this would be more suited for the battle of bent time, considering that Jack is hoping to alter the course of history, but it’ll have to do. Every season has dealt with faith, science and destiny and the finale looks to mix all three into an explosive combination. Jack finally has faith that the island wants something of him, so he’s using science to blow up part of the island and change his destiny.
MP3: David Bowie – Bombers (live at the BBC)
This unused song from the Hunky Dory sessions fits in nicely with the current path of Lost. A group of people get together and decide to set off a nuke on a sandy area. Is that a group of scientists/army officials testing bombs in the desert or Jack and Richard toasting the island? Add to the mystery that the “old man” who lived where the bomb was set off seemed to survive the explosion, albeit possibly not in body. Holy cow… maybe that’s where the corporally-challenged Jacob comes from?? Is Lost just the plot of Hunky Dory outtakes set on an island?! Probably not. But it’s a great tune.
MP3: Q-Tip – Johnny’s Dead
“Dead is dead.” One of the creepier moments of this season is where we realized just how unnerved Ben was by the fact that John Locke was alive and well after having been murdered just a short while ago. I doubt Q-Tip’s song is about the incredible resurrection of Jeremy Bentham, but it very well could be accidentally prophetic in that regard.
MP3: The Lovin’ Spoonful – Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind
Time for a lighthearted break. For over half a decade now, Sawyer has been the biggest ladykiller on Lost Island. Seriously, the guy’s laid every major female cast member now. But that’s coming around to bite him on the butt now that he’s got to pick between Kate and Juliet. That would have been a major plot struggle in season one, but it’s just a source of a background tension, which is why I have no problem giving it this bubble-gum flavored song.
MP3: Simon & Garfunkel – I Am a Rock
This one’s for Jack. In addition to repeatedly referencing an island, this song sums up what Jack has become in this season of Lost. He lost Kate and any attachments he had back home. He’s not really the leader of the Losties any more (a fact which slightly bugs me; I’m no Sawyer fan) and he’s withdrawn because of it. They say no man is an island, but when you’re as disconnected as Jack, you aren’t too far off. “I won’t disturb the slumber of feelings that have died / If I never loved, I never would have died” also hits on Jack’s desire to erase ever having been on the island and fallen in love with Kate.
