[MP3] new Ivana XL: “Happy Birthday”

May 3rd, 2009 · No Comments

Ivana XL emailed me the other day to let me know she started recording an album’s worth of songs with a producer. “Happy Birthday” is the first song to be ready from that batch and it’s a great appetite-whetter for what’s to come.

MP3: Ivana XL – Happy Birthday
“Happy Birthday” sounds like Fiona Apple frozen in a moment of falling apart. Fitting, since the chorus of the song is Ivana wishing she could melt herself. She’s ready to melt and fall apart, but being trapped in ice is the worst. The song’s swimming in “trapped” imagery as well; she tries to rebel, but that’ll only get you so far.

I’ll let Ivana explain how “Happy Birthday” is different from her other material:

“What’s kinda cool about these songs is that they have more instruments! And bridges! And were not recorded in my friends’ basements, bedrooms, and bathrooms!” – Ivana XL

No word on when the new group of songs will be available for sale, but I’ll let you know as soon as I do.
