Oh hey. I know I’m about a month late to the party, but would you mind terribly if I had some of the punch? Micachu and the Shapes have been blowing up all over the place, but I just got around to downloading the album this past week. It’s funny; only on the internet in 2009 will you be considered “way behind” for first hearing a band’s album two days before it’s sold in stores. But I’m finally here and I gotta say that I agree with the crowd on this one: it’s awesome.

The craziest thing about Micachu and the Shapes is that is sounds like she’s got a great ear for production and composition, but a total disregard for making any of it sound smooth. Some songs straddle that line of dissonance where some people are going to find it genius (me) and others are going to beg you to turn it off. I’ve always said that my favorite songs are ones with great melody but something else going on that gives your brain a slight jarring (be it distortion, odd orchestration or unusual song structure) — and Micachu fits that perfectly.
