Beach House @ Al’s Bar 3.31.09
April 1st, 2009 by Matt

Beach House are part of that beautiful new frontier for music that makes my ears tingle. And though I’ve been a passive fan since 2006, the two shows I caught in March have flipped the switch to “active.”
Even though I don’t think the Lexington show sold out, it was one of the most anticipated show our city has had in a while. In fact, I wound up standing next to a guy who drove up from Nashville to see them. It was his first time seeing Beach House and he was way, way excited. I can’t blame him, though; it was my second time seeing Beach House in almost a week and I was still way, way excited.

They started off with “Gila,” which is kind of a bold move. They’ve got better songs, but that’s kind of like Grizzly Bear starting off with “Knife” — it’s their most recognizable song and probably the peak of the show for the more casual fans. But for me it just opened me up to the rest of their material. I can’t name any of the songs I was blown away by, but each time there would be a ping of recognition in my brain where I thought “alright, it’s this song!” But unlike most bands, my lack of familiarity with the depth of Beach House’s work aided my enjoyment of the show. I fell hard for each sonic twist they delivered since I didn’t know it was coming. It’s like seeing a magic trick for the first time — you might still be fooled or impressed on subsequent demonstrations, but you’ll never be as surprised as when you didn’t know it was coming.

Victoria was cute and more talkative than at their SXSW appearance I caught. Her first question of the night: “So is everybody out there drinking bourbon?” (Cheering) “Of course. That’s like having a baguette in Paris.” Hey, if Kentucky has to get stereotyped, I’m glad it’s for making the best alcohol.
