Poor Vivian Girls. I don’t think they know how good their voices sound. Before they got started, they had to check how much reverb was on their voice. “Can you hear what I’m saying?” one of them asked. When the crowd cheered affirmatively, they all three responded in near-unison: “More reverb.” Eventually we could barely understand them and that suited them enough to get started.

Their set consisted of a lot of new material that they said they’d just recorded in LA for release later this year. The songs all sounded wonderful, but I couldn’t help but wish for more of the songs on their debut LP that I’d grown to love. Luckily my Thursday plans also include the Vivian Girls, so I’ll likely have another shot at hearing my favorites. In fact, everyone in Austin has a chance — Vivian Girls are playing 16 shows during SXSW!
