“Twelve Gates to the City” is a traditional song popularized by Carly Simon (and maybe written by Rev. Gary Davis?) that These United States covered for Splice’s compilation “Old Lonesome Sound”. They’re joined by the lines of Phosphorescent — who tackles “Swanee River” — Vandaveer and more. It’s a great compilation that unfortunately requires registration to download; but I picked this one to give you a sample, so at least there’s that.
MP3: These United States – Twelve Gates to the City
While I’m quick to point out that all the best songs on These United States awesome 2008 album Crimes are all the fast ones — this slow recording actually suits the band quite nicely. It compliments both Jesse’s voice and Tom’s steel guitar playing — two elements of the band that are often hard to properly enjoy in the rush of a good song.
