[VIDEO] Johnny and June Carter Cash sing “Jackson”

February 14th, 2009 by Matt

Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone! I’ll be taking the day off to spend with the girl I love; so I thought I’d whip up a quick post so I can rest easy.

I did a little reading (“wikipedia-ing”) recently on “Jackson.” Originally the song ended with the couple’s marriage. Co-author Jerry Leiber said the beginning of the song was garbage and Billy Edd Wheeler used a passionate wedding as a launching point for a song about a couple who’ve been married long enough for their passions to have dwindled a bit. Both talk about taking a trip to Jackson like they’re going to be King or Queen of the town and downplay the other’s ability to keep up. It might be a sad song in some versions, but when Johnny and June Carter perform it, “Jackson” turns into a ribbing love song between two people who’ve shared a lot.
