[MP3] The New Mary Jane: “Hail the Young Girls”

February 11th, 2009 by Matt

Let’s just get this out of the way: “The New Mary Jane” is a horrible band name. Absolutely awful. Unless this guy’s mom asked him to name the band this on her death bed, I’m going to have a hard time forgiving him quickly. Also, the guy’s got no decent press photo for me to work with here. So strike two. HOWEVER, on the third pitch — writing good music — he nearly knocks a home run.

MP3: The New Mary Jane – Hail The Young Girls
I know I’m dropping the ball on this one, but I can’t quite place who The New Mary Jane sound like. My first inclination is Caribou on a budget, but I could also see myself going for a Galaxie 500 comparison. Oh well. I’ll let you do your own on this one. My only (required) contribution? “It sounds good.”

The New Mary Jane is a reference to an unreleased song by The Beatles which was called, “What’s the New Mary Jane?”.

Who do they sound like? Well, you could have said, “They sound like The Grifters”, seeing as how the two guitar players / singers were in The Grifters…

You’re not too good at this, are you?

Chris, the point is to give bands as a reference point that people will be familiar with. My friend who passed along this song told me they were in the Grifters. But really, if you aren’t from Memphis, what’s that going to mean to you? The Grifters aren’t big enough to where readers in the UK, or California are going to know what they sound like. But Caribou and Galaxie 500? Hopefully so.
