Last time I posted on Cymbals Eat Guitars, I noted that they sound like they would have been particularly appreciated in the post-Arcade Fire/Wolf Parade wake of 2005. However, I listened to “Wind Phoenix” shortly thereafter and realized that that’s not completely true of the band. Hell, let’s go ahead and start appreciating them right now!
MP3: Cymbals Eat Guitars – Wind Phoenix
The launching point of “Wind Phoenix” sounds like a moment that ad execs would kill to have in a commercial. Sure it takes a bit of a Malkmus noodling turn after that, but the initial explosion is pure joy. After that it sounds like Malkmus’ last album mixed with just a bit more melody. But whereas Real Emotional Trash was like I’m going to wander as far and as quickly as I can and you can’t stop me, “Wind Phoenix” is more of a we’ll see where we go with this one wander and I find it much more pleasant.

Simon Pegg’s series Spaced is amazing. Buy it on Amazon or watch it all illegal-like.
