Matt & Kim w/ The Lemurs @ the Mohawk 12.13.08

December 15th, 2008 by Matt

Disclaimer: Philips Electronics flew me and a few other bloggers to Austin, TX to check out their Undiscovered Austin show and their GoGear MP3 player. It’s not affecting my coverage (I didn’t like the band who won enough to blog about their performance) but I just figured I’d let you know.

Matt and Kim were the less-than-secret guest for the finale show of the Undiscovered Austin series. As a friend pointed out, the Mohawk had M&K listed on their Myspace as playing that night. But hey, gotta get people out to the show, right?

I’d love to say that the show was evenly split by adults drinking on the balconies of the Mohawk and the 18-21 crowd in the front going nuts… so I will. There were a few older folks downstairs, but most of us couldn’t keep up with the freshly college-aged fans who were going bonkers in the front row for Matt & Kim.

Now having seen Matt & Kim for more than one song (I caught “Yeah Yeah!” at Lollapalooza once as I was walking by), I can say that they put on a fun live show that seem like they can only get better. Kim smiled away as she pounded out different beats; Matt thrashed about during songs and told us funny stories between them. However, I can’t help but wish they’d decided to shake me a bit more. If the keyboards had been treated like guitars at some points — amped up and given a little body-trembling bass — it would have helped loads.

Oh, but the best part of all. Towards the end, Matt announced that they had two and a half songs. “A half?” I wondered to myself. “What’s that all about?” Well, a Dead Prez cover is what that was all about. They played about a minute of “Bigger Than Hip Hop” which was enough to get the older crowd throwing their hands in the air and chanting along. However, it was just a tease and the band launched into one of their own songs.
