The Englishmen: “Double Torch”

December 1st, 2008

As I said, I really enjoyed Andrew English’s set as The Englishmen opening for Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy. I can’t remember what song that he played there really sounded amazing, but it’s kind of a moot point anyway as I only have two of his songs. Oh well, we’ll have to settle for “very good” until I can track down that amazing one.

MP3: Andrew English - Double Torch
Andrew’s solo stuff is a lot softer than his material in Scourge of the Sea — probably because he doesn’t have Robbie’s drumming backing him up. Still it gives me a lot more time to focus on his lyrics, which are arguably better than he’s ever done. After I got over my initial hope that this would somehow be a Demetri Martin “double hawk” reference, I liked his comparison between the fire in his girl’s eyes as like two torches. Now that’s some palpable passion.

Hey guys, the Italians will pay you to name your baby “Mussolini.” Score.
