Generic viagra lowest prices, Depending on who you ask, Will Oldham's show on Friday was either the most beautiful show to his Lexington in years (barring Jeff Mangum's appearance, naturally) -- or a train wreck. Oldham's beautiful lyrics and his bands' well-crafted instrumentation were muddled or practically inaudible due to sound difficulties. However, I was in the front row -- so it all sounded great to me, generic viagra lowest prices.
I don't know much about Will Oldham personally, but the guy's got a great sense of humor. Generic viagra lowest prices, Only he could take the opportunity of playing a well-decorated, beautiful venue in a city he hasn't played in years... and use it to fuel the rivalry between that city and his hometown. The Lexington/Louisville rivalry (think Shelbyville and Springfield rivalry from the Simpsons for you out-of-state readers) gave him plenty of fodder for jokes through the whole night, generic viagra lowest prices. In fact, one of his first jokes of the evening was that they were going to have to play without microphones or amps because "the sound guys are from Lexington." Boo. Generic viagra lowest prices, Hiss. Laugh.

But if Oldham wounded any Wildcat egos, he repaired them with the best set I've seen a folk singer play in years, generic viagra lowest prices. Possibly ever. Generic viagra lowest prices, As I said, his band started off un-mic'd and Oldham used the opportunity to work his stage presence. As he belted out the first songs, Oldham put his body into it as well. He leaned over the crowd like a politician; his hands entranced you like a turn-of-last-century snake oil salesman; and his eyes had enough fire for him to have been an old time preacher. I don't know what he's like in person, but on Friday night Will Oldham was every passionate madman from the depression generation rolled up into one of the finest folk singers of mine.
Now, as one who grew up exposed to a bit more bluegrass and folk music than he'd like, I can honestly say that Will Oldham has sacrificed nothing to achieve the sound on his current tour. I'm confident that -- strangeness and off-color jokes aside -- I could have taken my bluegrass-loving grandparents to this show and they would have been impressed. Oldham's backing band played a banjo, upright bass, acoustic guitar and an electric one for good measure.
Clearly if I'm not a fan of bluegrass or most folk music, but love Will Oldham, something must be different. And there is: it's his approach. It was this traditional structure that made his extraordinary lyrical prowess stand out even more than it does on record. If you're paying attention, really paying attention to Will Oldham's work, you'll realize that he's never written the same song twice (unless most bluegrass music I hear, which I always swear I've heard one hundred times before).

The biggest standout moment of the night came when Will gave a preface to a cover song. He spoke for a minute about being touched by the fact that Barack Obama quoted a song in his acceptance speech. He said that made him feel like Barack represented, or at least was in touch with musicians and music fans. He and his band then covered the very same song Obama quoted: Sam Cooke's "A Change is Gonna Come." You can see a recording of the cover here.

So, for me, this was an amazing show. The Hemlock benefit showcased one of Kentucky's finest songwriters (Johnny Cash covered a song of his, for goodness' sake) in a beautiful setting. But for those who found themselves craning their neck to hear what Oldham was saying, just know that he tried harder than anyone in his shoes would have. When he gave up the microphone for a song sang by someone else in the band, he and the guitarist yelled along with the chorus into the mic that was pointed at the guitar amplifier. Later he got down on his hands and knees to sing into that microphone again.
Show me anyone who's putting that much heart into their performance and I'll show you that everyone in earshot is having the time of their lives.
