The Besties: “Man vs. Wild”

November 20th, 2008

Weird story. So while I was at the Of Montreal show in New York, I bumped into Marissa from the Besties, who I’d met last year at their show in Lexington. She recognized me and told me that they’d just got in the first copies of their new album Home Free and she just happened to have one right there! I finally got a chance to listen to it and it’s just a blast. Thank goodness for serendipity!

MP3: The Besties - Right Band, Wrong Song
This one starts off as the most sparsely instrumental track on the album and keeps it at that level for a while. But (spoiler alert!) has a few more instruments jump in shortly after the two minute mark. That lone acoustic guitar sounded great, but it gets even better with the inclusion of the full band. Strangely, their use of the keyboard sounds like they had a similar thought as to how Beulah used their horn section. It’s like having a riff that repeats, but is free to wander and change through the song.
