Galaxie 500: “Listen, The Snow is Falling”

November 18th, 2008 by Matt

The first snow of the season, outside my home in Lexington, KY

My girlfriend called me last night around six. I assumed the call was to make sure I was ready for her birthday dinner with her parents, but it was actually to tell me to look out the window. Lexington had its first snowfall last night, much earlier than I figured we would. I love the spring and summer months, but I’m absolutely crazy about snow. I can’t get in the Christmas spirit without it and it’s the only thing that allows me to make it through winter without going bonkers. So here’s Galaxie 500′s “Listen, The Snow is Falling” off This Is Our Music.

MP3: Galaxie 500 – Listen, the Snow is Falling
Like Funkadelic’s “Maggot Brain,” the guitar solo of “Listen, the Snow is Falling” is one where I find it impossible to turn off my brain. Most guitar solos are hammers — they beat you and beat you until you say “Oh yes, I get it now. You’re very good.” But these two are shovels. Partly because they slowly build their pile, note upon note, measure upon measure until you’re buried in sound; but mostly because they dig up things. “Listen, the Snow is Falling” digs up memories I haven’t thought about for years. Listening to it, I find myself remembering what it was like to be 10 years old, then wondering what I’ll be like as an old man. It’s an emotional song for absolutely no identifiable reason at all — and I love it.
