Dressy Bessy with High Water Marks & One for the Team @ Al’s Bar 11.8.08

November 17th, 2008 by Matt

I must confess that I spent most of my time at Dressy Bessy’s show talking to my girlfriend’s brother, who I hadn’t seen in forever. He, his girlfriend and I had a jolly old time clowning around, but it meant I wasn’t really paying much attention. I thought about not posting anything at all on either band, since I didn’t get decent photos or form real thoughts during their set, but then figured that I owed it to both bands to point out how good they were… so consider this that.

One for the Team, as I’ve previously highlighted, are awesome. I hadn’t heard one note — let alone one song — from them prior, but loved their set. They’ve already made plans to come back to Lexington soon, so you can look forward to that.

Lexington’s High Water Marks were also great. I hadn’t seen them play probably a year, so it was a welcome return for me. They’ve easily got one of the best drummers in town, so they’re always fun to watch. In fact, I think I spent most of their set watching their drummer, looking at my girlfriend’s brother (who is also a drummer) and raising my eyebrows. We were both pretty impressed.

High Water Marks

I hadn’t seen Dressy Bessy since 2005, a length which I hoped to interrupt in Denver at the Monolith Festival. Unfortunately the line was so long that I spent their whole set waiting to get into the festival. I felt stupid for missing the band, until I looked to my right and saw John Hill’s Apples in Stereo bandmate Eric Allen stuck in line next to me. Hey, if your friend and bandmate can’t make it in on time, I can’t be expected to make it inside on time.

But I finally bucked the trend and managed to catch Dressy Bessy again. Their show was good, but it was about twenty minutes in where I realized how few of their songs I knew. I liked nearly every song, but couldn’t help but hold my breath for the hits. Still, it was quite a fun show.
